Two confirmed dead in active shooter incident on Brown campus, police do not have any suspects in custody
The alert and call were sent to students immediately by DPS following the incident, urging students to hide, run or evacuate until further notice.
Video footage obtained by The Herald showed several police officers on campus, as well as several emergency vehicles on the surrounding roads.

At least two victims were killed in an active shooter incident at Barus and Holley, according to an email to the Brown community. An additional eight victims are in critical condition and have been hospitalized.
A 5:27 p.m. update from the Department of Public Safety reported shots fired near Governor Street. A later DPS alert deemed that report unfounded. No suspects have been taken into custody, according to a 5:10 DPS alert.
Video footage obtained by The Herald showed several police officers on campus as well as several emergency vehicles on the surrounding roads. Additional footage depicted police appearing to assist several individuals lying on the ground near the Sciences Library.

Several buildings across campus have been placed on lockdown.
DPS sent the alert to students immediately following the incident, urging students to hide, run or evacuate until further notice. A suspect was allegedly in custody at 4:50 p.m., according to an alert from DPS, but another alert 20 minutes later said that no suspects were in custody.
Katie Sun ’28 was studying in the Engineering Research Center lobby when she heard gunshots around 4:10 p.m. She evacuated the building, leaving behind all her belongings, and ran to her dorm for safety.
“It was honestly quite terrifying. The shots seemed like they were coming from … where the classrooms are,” she said.
Refath Bari GS was walking down the stairs in the ERC when he heard gunshots.
“There was confusion and then people started running,” he said. “I ran as fast as I could to the other side of the street towards Thayer Street, and then I found a student and went into her apartment.”
In a message to The Herald, Sruti Peddi ’28 said that while in Zinneken’s on Thayer Street, she began receiving numerous texts and phone calls from friends, who said they heard shots near Hegeman Hall.
“I was hearing then that the shooter left and started walking up Thayer Street,” Peddi wrote. “I was worried because I was there, and there were sirens passing us.”
DPS did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
