Akron Beacon Journal
The city of Akron is urging people to stay away from the area of Rosemary Boulevard between Kelly Avenue and South Arlington Street following reports of a three-alarm hazardous materials fire in the area.
Akron Fire Department responded to the scene at 1081 Rosemary Boulevard.
According to a news release from the city, "The building contains chemicals which are burning and creating an unsafe hazmat situation."
Surrounding area evacuated
City spokeswoman Stephanie Marsh said the Akron Police Department is evacuating a half-mile radius around the facility.
The Aldi on South Arlington Street and Chesapeake Pointe Apartments across from the facility have been evacuated.
Those displaced by the evacuation are being bussed to Firestone Park Community Center at 1480 Girard Street, which is being used as a reunification center.
Any overflow will be transported to Joy Park Community Center at 825 Fuller Street.
History of the building
The building opened in 1955 as the home of Trailmobile Inc., which built and repaired truck trailers and containers for nearly 30 years on the site. In 1982, Tradco Inc., a company that made automotive lubricants and chemicals, moved into the 25,000-square-foot building and operated there for about 25 years.
